Also called a 台目棚. If you're using it in this way, the 風炉 board is 4 寸 (= 12.1 cm) from the back; otherwise it's 6 寸 (18.2 cm).
In that case, walk backwards (if the door is open), crossing the threshold with the R foot. If the door is closed, stand up, turn as you'd always do, and open the door.
You need to gauge a bit how far away from everything you need to be sitting. Your line of the knees determines then where you put the 茶碗 when the tea is made (and the 道具 for 拝見).
It closes 本仕舞い. It's a very 詫び affair, so at least you can make it a bit more formal by finishing the way you started (as with all small rooms).
The shelf is used as you'd expect: 羽箒 and 香合 before 炭手前; then 棗 in the middle, then 柄杓 and 蓋置 after 薄茶.
KM 25 suggested that you could use the nail to hang the 柄杓 as you do in 吉野棚, for example, with the 蓋置 underneath it.
It's a fun 棚 to use in 炉, because then the place where the 風炉 lives is left free. The 水指 doesn't move to the middle!
In 濃茶, if you didn't have a hook for the 仕覆, you'd place it above the 建水's R shoulder.
