It's the 飾 of 香合; but it's also a bit of a jack-of-all-trades. You could use it for a 香合 (「ごゆいしょ。。。」) that you received from someone special; but also for a famed 香合 (「ごでんらい。。。」). Because of that, it might be a suitable 手前 for 行の行 (Miya 24).

Hiromi (pre-23) explained it will be very tight to do with a 棚, and even if it were possible, it would be a pretty silly idea, since you want to spotlight the 香合 and not have any distractions. In 表千家, they do it on the 棚.

👋 Note the spelling of 手前: For charcoal, you write 「手前」, for tea 「点前」.

手前

  • You enter with 炭斗 and 灰器, start 手前 almost as always: Because the 香合 is not in the 炭斗, however, it's 羽・環・箸・蓋. (👉 For the normal 炭　手前, it's: 羽・環・箸・香合・蓋.)
  • Then, when the time comes to lay the incense, you go out with the はいき, and come back with the 香合.
  • Once you've laid the incense (with your bare hands), you put out the 盆, then leave and return with the water jug. During this, the guest fetches the 盆, and commences 拝見 when you wet the 釜.
  • Guest asks for the ごゆいしょ; they turn it on the ground.
