長板(ながいた)

It's a practise form for しんだいす, if I remember correctly. The feeling should be more formal than 平手前, according to 櫻井先生. Only used if room is 4.5 or larger.

  • Elegance and simplicity
  • 72.7 × 30.3 × 1.2 for , 84.8 × 36.4 × 1.8 for 風呂
  • 総荘(そう かざり): Complete display, often with 皆具(かい ぐ); 二つ置き (水差し and in 風呂), and 一つ置き (水差し only in ). The last two are basically 平手前.
  • Special 火箸 and special 茶杓 is used

Generally

  • For 風呂 and 水ずぎ(風呂 and 炉), walk to the right side of the 長板.
  • When taking things from or returning them to the 灼立て(しゃく たて), both hands on the in front of the 長板. So when you move the 蓋置き, which is not the 灼立て, the other hand remains on the lap. But when you pick up the 火箸 from the , R goes to the floor.

炭 (風呂 CQ77, CQ78)

  • Even though it's like , there's no shelf for and 香合, so they are brought in with the 炭斗.
  • Because 火箸 are in the 灼立て, the 感 are in the 炭斗 resting against the 胴炭 with the open side down (like in 後炭).
    • 火箸 never touch the floor (rehold)
    • Final cleaning of the 火箸
  • For 後炭, a 片口(かたくち)水次 is used

In 茶道口, 炭斗 on the side away from guests. Bow, walk to the side, fetch 灰器.
(first time put it quite close to 炭斗 to give room to ), 香合 (if there's no room on the 長板, put it on the )
火箸 (hands on , rehold L from underhand, then R overhand, put them into 炭斗) -
Close 釜葢 (bare or safe), 感, 釜式(かま しき) Close 釜葢 (bare or safe), 感, 組み釜敷き(くみ かま しき)(R, L, turn L to R, R above L)
Move closer (R knee, L knee), , first feather (after this, there's more space in front of the 炭斗)
- Take 火箸
Lay coals (rehold 火箸 in hands as if eating), second feather, 灰器, third feather (don't break the wrist on the 6th stroke, so hold the feather ~45°; then on 炭斗).
Pick up 香合, lid in front of the right knee, then 火箸 (rehold between first and second finger)
Turn 45° to present 香合 for 拝見 Put 香合 into 炭斗, clean 火箸 and return to 灼立て, shift to
pick up (you're there anyway already) move to 45°
- Put 感 right of , shift to take out 灰器 and guests will come to the 点前畳 for 拝見.
- Sit in 茶道口 with 水次 in front of you, wait for 拝見 to finish.
- Sit facing , 水次 to the right of the (about where it stood originally). 茶巾 on lid, then 水次 lid with two hands, turning L to R and put on in front of your knees.

While there with 茶巾, two strokes on lid (L on knob), then wipe the (L on lap). 茶巾 on 水次 lid, and put it back inverted with two hands. Go out.
- Come back, sitting in front of 風呂, take
Take 釜式 Take 釜敷き with R, then L below R and then R on the opposite edge
Adjust , put 感 into 炭斗 (open side up); shift back.
Clean lid, then goes back again.
Clean 火箸: Hold from top, L from bottom; pick up (2 brushes on top, 1 on bottom), back, 火箸 back into 灼立. Open lid bare or safe

take 灰器 and 炭斗 (sit directly in front of it to pick it up) Take 炭斗 (from middle position)

炉 初炭
In 茶道口, 炭斗 on the side away from guests. Bow, bring in 炭斗, fetch 灰器.

火箸 (shift, hands on , hold in L, shift back, put them next to / into 炭斗?)
Close 釜葢 (bare or safe), 感, 釜式(かま しき)
Move closer (R knee, L knee), , first feather (one hand on from beginning)
Moist ashes: 12 to 9, 9 to 6, 12 to 3, then take ash, put down the spoon, hold like 柄杓(ひしゃく)from above, and put ash 3 to 6 holding your hand like karate koken. Put down scoop, rehold, scoop new ash and pour from 6 to 3. Tidy up ash, pick up container, turn and put it down.
Second feather, lay coals (rehold 火箸 in hands as if eating; take えだずみ from front!), third feather (then on 炭斗).
Pick up 香合, lid in front of 炭斗, then 火箸 (rehold between first and second finger)
Present 香合 for 拝見

Take 釜式
Adjust , put 感 into 炭斗 (open side up); shift back.
Clean lid, then goes back again.
Clean 火箸: Hold from top, L from bottom; pick up (1 brush on top, 1 on bottom), back, 火箸 back into 灼立. Open lid bare or safe

風呂 薄茶 + 濃茶 (CQ75, 76)

薄茶 濃茶
Bow at door. Carry in + 茶碗, leaving the door open, sit in the middle; but place them on the side in front of the 水差し. Don't bow, wait with 茶碗 in front of you, close the door, sit in the middle, rehold 茶碗 and place it left with L; move 茶入 and R, L, R 茶碗
Set Up : take 建水 with both hands, take 火箸 (fingertips on ).
Take 火箸: fingertips on , they go out at 12 o'clock, wanter to 3 o'clock, 6 o'clock and then around the phantom 建水. Hold with L at the middle, bring them parallel to legs, rehold with R, slide L to the end and with R on the , put them about 5 cm peeking out from the 長板 on the (as far as your hands will comfortably allow)
take out ふたおき (R, L R) (slightly more in front than where it was in the 建水)
move 建水, and pause bow, then move 建水 and pause
茶碗 (R, L, R)
茶入れ, 仕覆(しふく)goes with L where normally the 蓋置 would stand (flip towards L, so knot faces guests)
茶杓, 茶筅
茶碗 to the front. Get 柄杓 (right, then straight), lid, 茶巾
If 帛紗 is needed, put it to the right of the knee and put in into sash after lid was placed on 蓋置, then 茶巾
水差し lid if lacquered, then move 茶碗 and put 茶巾 on lid, then 柄杓
If 帛紗 is needed, take the lid, then put it behind 建水
If 帛紗 is needed to open 釜葢, put it to the right of the right knee; otherwise, tuck it into sash.
柄杓 leaves 灼立て at 3 o'clock, and comes to you in a straight line (R of phantom 水差し)
tea as usual, remember: after scooping tea, open 水差し (R, L, R) and for 濃茶, add one ladle of cold water
Can I use 古帛紗 for 薄茶? If the bowl is not 楽, use 古帛紗
If 帛紗 still out, take it at the first guest's first sip Ask about tea, then shift 45°, after last guest's last sip, shift back, cold water, 帛紗 if it's still out
Ask if they want more, otherwise bow and close Bow when 茶碗 is returned, then oshimai after hot water rinse.

Close 本仕舞い(ほん じ まい)(in front of 水差し); first R for tea container, then 茶碗 R, L, R
Cold water, 湯返し(ゆ がえし), lid, 柄杓 cold water, 湯返し, 柄杓, lid!
水差し
拝見: Move 蓋置き onto 長板 (R, L, R). In 平手前, this would be moving the 蓋置 behind the 建水 (this time, put it where it was in the 建水). Then, put 火箸 back, also. Since 茶碗 is right of the center line, move it with 3 hands (R, L, R; otherwise it's directly with R)
拝見 as usual
take out 建水 and 茶碗 take out both, put 建水 in front of you when opening the door
水次(つぎ): Open lid with R, L
Wait with cleaned 建水, sitting in 茶道口 with the 建水 in front of you, until guests have finished 拝見. Sit in front of 長板, 建水 in front of you, and put 蓋置 in. Then, 建水 onto 長板 with both hands. Bring refreshed 建水 immediately after 水次, then close the door for 拝見

炉 薄茶 + 濃茶 (CQ81)

  • Uses a smaller 長板, with 茶入 waiting in the middle.
  • Facing outer edge (normal 濃茶 is inner edge)
  • Remember to turn 仕覆(しふく)towards the fire!
  • Since it is usually done with a 皆具(かいぐ)set, no wiping of the 水差し lid.
  • Still 3 hands to open it, though; even though standard 濃茶 uses 2. So maybe this is a mistake in CQ79?

濃茶

  • Bow after putting out the 蓋置 (since the 柄杓 is not out yet).
  • After opening the , shift to 長板 to get out the 柄杓; pour water and shift back to put it back into 灼立て; and then again to make tea. During this time, though, the 柄杓 rests on the .
    • Then put it back, after the first guest took the first sip.
  • Then, after the conversation, you build up everything again (蓋置, 釜蓋 with 茶巾 on it, and 柄杓 resting on ).

薄茶

  • After unloading the 茶碗 and moving it closer, turn to pick up 柄杓, open lid, move 茶巾 and then rest 柄杓 on
  • After closing and having moved 茶碗 fully packed in front of the 長板, turn towards it holding 柄杓 in the L, then change hands and put it back. Then turn 45°, and close 水差し lid.
    • This moving with 柄杓 in L never happens in 濃茶, because we'd move the 柄杓 first, and then close the lid.
