ホモテナシ

Table of Contents

流点

  • A friendly 点前, done in a small room for when host and guest want to converse. Obviously, only done for 薄茶, and when there's only one or two guests.
  • Both and 風炉 forms are ancient, but only the one was continually practised. The 風炉 form was discontinued, and revived by 圓能斎 around 1895 (宗室 19, CQ Vocabulary).
  • Miya said (IX 24) that the 風炉 used then to be placed where the is now, and the host would face the guests directly!
  • Often the host will partake, but it's not a fixed rule.
  • Some videos I see use the 吹雪, maybe because top and bottom are the same as host and guest are?

点前

  • Host sits facing the guests (fully in , 45° in 風炉). Because of this, the 水指 comes to sit in a different position.
  • The 水指 also sits in a new position, because of that the 茶碗 and 拝見 道具 sit differently (as long as it's there)
  • It is common for the host to drink, so it is a good practise for even non-流点 situations where the host partakes in tea. However, in non-流点, the host's drinking marks the end of the 点前, but in 流点, there's the option that the guests will want to have another tea (Miya 23).
  • For 拝見, when the 道具 return, the 水指 is gone, so they can go back to their normal position.

風炉

  • board of the 風炉 not placed at 7 or 9 weaves, not in the middle as in 中置, but instead at 17 or 19.
  • Position of the 茶器 and 茶碗: 宗室 says where they go when it's (which doesn't make sense, because the 風炉 sits in an odd place here), よし庵 says on the line connecting the corner and 鐶付(かんつき), and CQ says they go in-between (see above).
  • 建水 isn't moved during the 点前, so it is put directly where it belongs; and: it is not unpacked until needed, so purification happens before it is unloaded 🤯 (But, in , it is moved around as usual.) Also, when you finish, it's not moved, as well, so the 柄杓 is put on it parallel to the host, not the wall! Because of that, the 茶碗 can't go to the wall, so it will instead go in front of the 風炉 with one hand. For taking the 建水 away, just turn one knee's width towards it.

⚠️ Usually it's the rule that after the guest asks for 拝見, the 蓋置 moves; but this is the exception! Here you move the 蓋置 (place it with L behind the 建水), then close the 水指, then get asked for 拝見.

  • CQ and 宗室 say 茶碗 is one 茶碗's width away from the 貴人畳; but よし庵 explain it's in front of the R knee. I like the latter explanation more. Miya explained in IX 24 that they are just shifted a bit because you as the host, too, have shifted a bit.
  • For 拝見, you still move a little bit when taking 薄茶器 and 茶杓. Position of the 道具 is like the 茶碗, a 茶碗's width away from 貴人畳.

  • done when it's freezing, to add lots of warmth
  • Sit inside the 炉縁, 建水 quite visible
  • When opening 水指, R, L at 8 o'clock, L at 14:00, put on side

御自服

Host partakes: (The following is true for all cases when the host partakes, not just 流点.)

  • Bowl returns, but there's no おしまいください yet.
  • So, the host continues to make tea, and the first guest brings the sweets' tray to the host (around the time the 茶巾 is used), leaving enough room for the tea.
  • When the tea is sorted, they say: どうぞご自服を(ごじふく).
  • Host adds cold water (to show he temporarily stops working),
  • Then shifts to face the guest (at least よし庵 and Miya do it like this; but 宗室 doesn't).
  • 感謝 the , but don't eat (presumably because you've tasted the sweets in the 水屋). Instead, turn the tray, put it a bit away from yourself.
  • Take in the bowl, say お相伴いたします(おしょうばん), 感謝 and turn just a bit CW (Miya 23). It is already facing away from you, so it's just a little gesture. When you've finished, continue to turn CW, so it ends up facing you again.

📦 If it happens during 茶箱, then the 古帛紗 will be the wrong way. So grasp it overhand (like 茶杓 for 拝見) before putting it next to yourself so it's facing the right way).

  • Meanwhile, the first guest comes to fetch the sweets' tray
  • If you turned, turn back and put down the bowl

➡️ Normally, it is clear that now the tea making is finished, but in 流点, it may continue back and forth.
