且座之式(しゃざ の しき)

Named after the Zen expression 且坐喫茶 (しゃや きっさ)(“Have a seat and drink tea”).

Roles are decided by 札(ふだ)or agreed upon. The roles don't change during the exercise:

  • 月(がつ)is the first host and prepares 濃茶(こいちゃ)
  • 花(はな)is 半東(はんとう)and prepares 薄茶(うすちゃ)for the host
  • first guest prepares the incense
  • second guest arranges the flowers
  • third guest lays the charcoal

After the roles are decided, host and 半東(はんとう)put on the 帛紗(ふくさ). The third guest uses the 帛紗 of the 半東 to lay the coal, the other two guests don't need one. Note that none of the guests need to leave the room or see the 水屋, everything is brought to them by the 半東.

Preparation

The exercise takes place in an 8 mat room. The following needs to be prepared:

  • In the 床の間, the scroll is hung and a flower vase placed on a board underneath it (or hung). The vase is filled 80 %. In CQ85 it is placed slightly to the left of the scroll, Christine placed it directly underneath.

Everything has been prepared for the first guest to prepare the incense.

  • Assistant brings 香盆 to first guest, returns to entry
  • Host asks the first guest to 「どうぞお香を」
  • Check with R if 香炉's got heat
  • Then slide up to the
  • Open 重香合's lid, place to R, take from it the paper and put it inside, two lines away from the border
  • Close lid, open second tier
  • Take 銀葉鋏, take the 銀葉, hold your pulse and place it on the ash
  • Press the 銀葉 slightly with the nail of your R ring finger, also holding your pulse
  • Take paper, open the bottom flap, then take 火箸, open top flap and side flats.
  • Take 香 snippet from top and bottom, and while holding it with the 火箸 fold the paper again, except for the bottom flap. Place it on the L, again 2 lines away from the border; and then put the incense, holding your pulse.
  • Close the paper completely, and put it on R again
  • Sample sniff without turning, then put to the next guest inside.
  • Close 重香合, open lid again, put paper in and close. Slide back.
  • The last guest won't turn the 香炉 after listening, but instead bring it to the first guest and put it to the L from the (from the first guests perspective). They will listen, then put it on the tray again.
  • The host will say that the 香 should stay in the room, the first guest will slide forward, turn the and the assistant will put it in the 床, to the 下座 of the flowers even.

Braindump 7 VII 24

  • tana with chaire and chaki on it. Better not have the feather on it, as well, so everyone has their proper turn without anything distracting.
  • Guests enter, host enters to greet & everyone bows
  • Host sits in his spot
  • Hanto dumps flowers in front of toko (geza, which BTW is near the tokobashira), host asks the second guest to do the flowers
  • They stand up, arrange them, host asks to add water, which the guest then does (unlike to hana shomou). No viewing of the flowers, which is odd.
  • Hanto brings sumitori, on the way back takes kadai, brings haiki and places it with fukusa in front of temaeza. Host asks to put the sumi, then third guests lays the sumi.
  • Hanto takes away sumitori and haiki, then there's haiken of the furo for the 3 guests.
  • Then hanto brings the kobon (already facing the guest), teishu sais okouwo, then the first guests does kou:
    • slide forward RLR
    • check with R if charcoal is fine
    • Take lid with R (2 hands when on the stack, put down with one hand left of the kobon)
    • Take out paper, put it to the R 2 lines away
    • Lid on the stack, open second layer
    • Take basami with R, rehold, take ginjo at 6 o'clock, stabilise hand, put in korou, rehold, put down with R
    • Lightly press ginjo with nail of R ringfinger
    • Take paper, open top flip, take hibashi (supposed to be ebony?), open rest with them, take incense on top and bottom, ideally. While holding it, close paper with L and put down to L. Place incense, put down hibashi, close paper completely and put to R
    • Sample korou without turning, during this 2nd guests osakinis the 3rd, then put inside to 2nd guest
    • When handling korou, turn CCW
    • 1st guest closes stack and puts away the paper.
    • teishu doesn't turn back the korou, but brings it to 1st guest and puts it to the L of the koubon
    • 1st guest takes 3 sniffs (breathing out to the R), then puts it on the koubon
    • Teishu sais something like お香そのまわり, the 1st guest turns the bon, puts it a bit away, and slides back.
  • hanto picks up bon, puts it in the toko more geza than the flowers (so better to use a flower container that can be placed kamiza in the toko)
  • hanto brings in koicha stuff, leaving kensui in front of kamiza
  • teishu makes koicha, after sorei the hanto moves to teishus spot so he can drink
  • hanto returns bowl for haiken, then sits in their spot again
  • teishu only does kuri kuri, then leaves the bowl. When the kuri kuri starts, the hanto needs to get the midare kashi, and when it's put in front of shokyaku, both hanto and teishu stand up together. In the geza, they touch shoulders as the hanto walks to the temae za.
  • hanto makes usucha for teishu
  • ciao miao
