This is an old revision of the document!

後炭 is a bit tricky here, and the books are not sufficiently clear about it. The main issue is that there are several orientations from which the is handled and shifted.

  • As in normal 後炭, unload 炭斗 first (which is only the ), then close the lid.
  • Shift forward to interact with the : Lift the chains by 3 eyes, then put out the 釜敷 and detach . (In the end, it's the other way around: first lower the , then move yourself.)
  • Remove the bail (弦): So while holding it, shift to NE, detach, and put it leaning against the 屏風.
    • It could also be, however, that while holding the attached bail, you shift to face N instead. This would save some shifting. In fact, in normal 後炭, you also detach the 鐶 while you're not aligned with the .
    • Maybe, however, the deserves your full attention when interacting with it; and this is how you would do it in 初炭! So shift to face the at NE, detach the bail and place it near the 屏風. This doesn't look that awkward; but then you need to shift to N, pull the etc. which might be a bit too much of shifting.
  • Shift to face N, then pull the into NW. Detach 鐶 and place them in front of the bail, with their open end in the same orientation as the bail (as far as possible from the 屏風).
  • Shift back to face the , then raise the chains by 5 eyes.

Then it's business as usual: 初掃・直す・香 and 灰・中掃 (abbreviated!)・炭・後掃.

  • So in 初炭, you'd lower the chains by 5 now again; and I think that also makes sense here, since we're done with the . But maybe it's easier for the guests to see if you leave it raised and lower it only after the 水次… but I don't think that's the case.
  • Shift to face N, attach the 鐶 and shift to NE.
  • Normally, you'd shift now to face the , detach the 鐶 and place them next to the .
  • I think this shift is also so you can sit down afterwards with the 水次 where you conceptionally stood up from. Anyway, the huge 鐶 look a bit lost without the bail, so I'd put them back next to that rather than the . That's more difficult if you shift to face it, so I'd stay N.
  • But you could also place them next to the as in normal 後炭, in which case it probably makes sense to shift to face the

Come in with the 水次, sit to face the , replenish and wet, then leave. Remember that with the 片口, the lid stays on the floor until you've finished wetting the .

  • Normally, you'd come in facing the , attach 鐶 and shift forward. However, in 初炭 with the 釣り釜, you sit facing the to attach 鐶 and bail. I'd probably enter facing N, attach everything, shift to face the and put it in.
  • Then: 釜敷, lower chains by another 3 eyes, steady , shift back, open lid.
