みわたせ

  • Poem by Fujiware no Sadaie

miwataseba
hana mo moniji mo
nakarikeri
ura no tomaya no
aki no yūgure

Gazing long to the shore -
Never
Was there blossom or crimson leaf:
Out at sea's edge
A rush hut
in autumn dusk

  • Lord Teika said this, and 利休 had his own reply to this:

花をのみ

hana wo nomi Zeigte man doch den nur die Kirschblüten
matsubaran hito ni erwartenden Menschen
yamazato no den Frühling
yuki ma no kusa no der Gräser im tauenden Schnee
haru wo miseba ya. des Bergdorfes!
  • For this poem, there is a 名物茶入 called 初草 that reminds us of the brown grass in the melting snow.

Richness

  • Ulrich explains how 侘び can only come from knowing the richness (actual richness and the richness of cherry blossoms), and by explicitly turning away from it.
