ホモテナシ

二祖調心圖 (2nd patriarch in contemplation)

  • 907-960. It shows him drunk, which is considered an expression of a free spirit. (CQ75)

白蔵主(はく ぞうす)

  • Name of a fox who changed shape to convince a fox trapper to stop it. Painting by Eiraku Hozen, a famous, flamboyant potter; his painting style is quite in contrast (from Met Museum). The poem reads:

Beware of those who have renounced the world
although they wear the robes of priests
at heart they are foxes still.
