Table of Contents

October

  • Clear sky, fresh air. Mountains, wild flowers. Insects. Harvest time. Dew. Geese.

CNY

  • 名残の茶事(なごり): saying goodbye to 風炉 and the last leaves in the tea jar. Massively 詫び.
  • Simple 掛物(かけ もの)such as letters are preferable over heavy calligraphies.
  • Use up 香 from summer, so a mix of sandalwood, aloes wood etc.
  • Avoid fresh bamboo for chopsticks etc, instead use the ones that were used at the beginning of 風炉 and have faded.
  • Make sure to not make things look shabby: To be simple is good, but to make it too simple is bad (利休)
  • 中置き(なかおき). Slender 水差 to the left of 風炉. Particularly fitting might be a 水差 with pictures of a goose, maybe even with a tied letter as handle 😍
    • For Urasenke, at least; the Almanac suggests that because it's so cumbersome, bring it in only when needed. I quite like the idea.
    • 大板, 五行棚 or even 長板
    • Black straw ashes can be used in the 風炉.
    • 破れ風呂(やぶれ, やつれ ぶろ) or 欠き風呂(かき ぶろ)
  • 一粒万倍 quite good

tastes

Sen's Chadō 干菓子: Naruko (bird clapper) sweets. These baked rice crackers are shaped like the boards used for clappers that scare off birds from eating the rice that is ready for harvest; the images of three pieces of bamboo, which act as the clappers, are branded on the surface. LOWER LEFT: Suzume (sparrow) sweets. Hard-sugar cakes in the abstract form of sparrows darting around an autumn field.

His 主菓子 are Minori no aki (autumn harvest) sweets. These sweets, made of mashed sweet potato topped with pieces of boiled chestnut, are dyed and shaped to evoke the autumn foliage of a mountain.
