White Teas

Turtle Dove (2017) (w2t)

  • From white2tea, pressed in spring 2017 from large leaves, sun dried, no mechanical processing.
  • Western Tasting (19 III 2018): Wet leaves pleasant, already suggesting some fruitiness. Solid nose, wet cedar, macis, cooked strawberries. Very aromatic brew, dense and fruity, cooked berries, no astringency at all. The body is really amazing.
  • Gong Fu Cha: Generally, I thought it was less impressive, especially subsequent brews.

Fuding White (2011) (w2t)

  • White tea from Fuding, Fujian. Produced as cake in 2011, aged in Guangzhou.
  • Western Tasting (23 III 2018): Wet leaves very fragrant, old stone cellar walls, moss; old leather chairs big time! Same for the empty cup, almost cloying. Some honey, too. Beautiful colour! Golden. Nose is odd, vegetable broth? Yeah, Rosenkohl, light honey again. Quite light and sweet in taste. Very smooth, decent body, light honey and pine resin. Resin note (not cloying though) becomes stronger as it chills. Also a very faint minerality, and some canned peaches fluid.
  • Western Tasting (4 IV 2018): Wet leaves smell really spicy, empty cup quite fascinating. Old cognac, cellar, tobacco leaves. Nose has a grape-like quality; brew surprisingly thin and light. Peach-fruit in the back. Body slim, chalky. Some paper. Body becomes thicker as it cools.
  • Gong Fu Cha: Weird nose again. More martime wood now (Fuding is a coastal region). But taste is a lot more pronounced (maybe because it's the second brew and it had time to open?). Dried roses as fuck, quite dense and tasty! Light honey again, Akazien? Some darker suggestions too, cacao somewhere in the back.
  • TCM: I think it works on SI channel. Certainly puts things in motion, not so much a centering tea.
  • Personal Bottom Line: Not a tea I like too much.

Nepal: Himalayan Shangri-La (Schwarzenbach)

  • Western Tasting (4 IV 2018): Very different scent on the leaves. Muskat, I think, Darjeeling-like. Almost perfumed, very recogniseable. Sweet nose, baking spices; cardamom AF! Quite astringent to drink, grape seed tannins. Woodsy, leafy; quite big.

Wild Bai Mu Dan (yxhx)

  • Super wild white peony (wild Bai Mu Dan 白牡丹) from www.yxhxtea.net. Bai Mu Dan is tip and two leaves. Very nice nose, Kandiszucker, flowers, honey; cup also very sweet and mellow. Some light balsa woodiness, too. Very nice tea! When it chills, you realise how dense it is, a little bit old apricot flesh.

Fuding Old White (2008) (yxhx)

  • 老白 from yxhxtea (23 IV 19) (fuding old white from 2008): very nice, round white tea; very inoffensive, small honeyed sweetness.

Milan White (w2t)

  • milan white (15 V 19) from white2tea: sundried milan dancong leaves from Guangdong. Smells like a white tea, but then is super fruity, like the honey flavour in other white teas replaced by peaches. Very recommendable!

White Gongmei (w2t) (2014)

  • White Gongmei 2014 (18 VIII 19): good, intense nose. Bit metallic, bit rusty; warm bricks. Taste okay, not too amazing.

Hou Kui Bai (Länggass)

  • 26 XI 19: generic white tea, some violets, some baked. Some sourness and spice, very pleasant. A funny tingling.
  • Blind Western 28 X 21: dried hay flowers, quite breezy; cup itself not too spectacular, dried hay. Still very pleasant! (The big leaves gave it away though, so it wasn't really blind)

Gushu Cha Ya

  • to taste!
