茶箱(ちゃばこ)

Permission to learn these 点前 is given together with 小習, but there are more complicated movements that are seen in 奥伝(おくでん).

As Burke notes, 利休 possibly just put 茶碗 and 棗 next to each other in the 茶箱, and placed it horizontally in front of the 水指, then lifting them out of it. That makes alot of sense to me.

Types

  • 利休型(りきゅうがた)is made of unlacquered paulownia wood, can be small or big.
  • Red 一閑張り(いっかんばり)lacquer ware was favoured by Sōtan.

History

There are six 点前. Four were originally created by Gengensai (Urasenke XI). According to nihonjinron and CQ35, it was in Spring 1854 when he visited 松阪(まつさか)/ いせ that he designed the first three (花, 月 and 雪), later adding 卯の花 to complete the seasonal cycle. Then Ennōsai (Urasenke XIII) refined them.

Snow, moon and flower are often grouped together in Japan, read 雪月花(ゆき つき はな or せつげっか).

There are two more, which were created by Tantansai (XIV):

Own Thoughts

  • I think I can only truly consider these 点前 mastered when I've performed them in the setting they are ment to be carried out, that is, outside. Maybe I could try on Lindenhof, and either sit on a cushion or sit cross-legged. Make sure I use a proper 瓶掛け(びんかけ)with actual coal, lest I look silly like this guy.
    • A good goal would be to be able to perform 月(つき)by the time Riedberg's full moon ceremony is up.
  • It would be ridiculously cute if the inside of the 茶箱 looked like a miniature 茶実, but that's probably childish.
  • If I have this fascination with 海に出て, the 和敬点 would be right up my alley.
  • The simple white-ish 茶碗, 振り出し and 茶巾筒(つつ)may be quite suitable for 月, and it will probably look good against a paulownia (or some Swiss wood) backdrop. I find Ursula's tools very inspiring, but I can possibly make my own box out of some Swiss wood. Might be nice if the 茶杓 is then from the same wood, but with the bark still attached.
  • 古帛紗(こぶくさ)and 仕覆(しふく)with 草間 彌生(くさま やよい)motives!
